Good Morning Worthy Thirty Readers and Happy Monday!
I hope you are all doing well and are ready to take the bull by the horns on this fine November morning.
I just wanted to let you all know that we are now writing our Newsletter through Substack!
My brother, Nicholas, and I will try and post daily with updates on life, tips on reading and retention, our YouTube Channel: “Reading with Papa”, and much, much more.
We hope to continue this little journey we’ve begun just over one month ago.
In the very beginning of “The Sun Also Rises” by Ernest Hemingway, Robert Cohn, the hero's foil (the character who will serve to highlight the protagonist's strengths and weaknesses, by contrast) makes this tragic claim,
“I can't stand it to think my life is going so fast and I'm not really living it.”
I am sure we have all felt this feeling at some point in our lives.
Especially today in a world in which speed is one of the highest-valued assets.
Faster internet connection. Faster phones. Faster downloads. Faster dining service. Faster workouts. Faster swiping. Fasting. Speed dating. Speed reading. Faster drumming (#Whiplash).
Instant. Gratification.
Our goal is to help you slow your life down. Slow it down a little bit every day. Turn off the TV. Put your phone down. Pick up a book. Read.
Not only will you develop the most desired habit in the history of mankind (see Frederick Douglass), you will have re-captured control over your life in this world of speed.
The message of the Adam Sandler movie, “Click”, highlighted this very message.
Don’t blast through the tough times. Embrace them as much as you would embrace the good times.
As Kipling said, “If you can meet Triumph and Disaster and treat those two impostors just the same.”
You will have enjoyed every waking minute that you were gifted with on this Earth.
And who knows, maybe you’ll even learn a thing or two along the way.
Get slow. Get reading. Live deliberately.
Your Humble Reader,
Michael
